Instruction at Pittman Academy

Special Education

The exceptional education students are provided with small group and one-to-one instructions. General and exceptional education teachers collaborate to create lesson plans incorporating real-life experiences. Students are involved in support groups from various stakeholders. Students are provided tier I interventions/behavior supports. The school counselor and social worker provide interventions and meet with the students upon request. Students have a choice of school committees they can be a part of.

Edgenuity 2.0

Edgenuity 2.0 at Pittman Academy facilitates online credit recovery courses through an online learning portal. The classroom environment is conducive to learning and personal growth. Edgenuity 2.0 assist students daily to work diligently towards their projected goals. When monitoring students' progress, Pittman Academy uses a spreadsheet that shows students' progress biweekly. The Edgenuity spreadsheet shows whether or not there is an increase or decrease in their academic percentage online. In addition, there is communication with parents through conferences and email to discuss students' academic progress, attendance, and behavior. A functional and attractive display of a suitable environment that keep students motivated and engaged through courses is a bulletin board called "Shooting Stars." The board displays four students weekly who completed their courses. This student goal has created available data for use along with data in Edgenuity.

Edgenuity 1.0/Middle School Instruction Students enrolled in Edgenuity learn different materials, depending on grade level, that all tie together to aid their academic success. Middle school students are generally assigned introductory courses to help them establish what type of learners they are, how effective studying and study habits are, and a host of other educational tools to aid them through their academic careers. High school students are generally enrolled in courses that help them strengthen existing academic skills and stay on track with their home school. These courses include anything from Art History to Spanish and can be used as a high school credit if the class is complete during their duration at Pittman. In these courses, all of the students in the Edgenuity program are learning to work independently and at a steady rate toward target completion.

GED Program

The GED test covers four subjects: Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reasoning through Language Arts. The student receives tutoring in all subject areas, whether online or in person, with a teacher or tutor. Students in the GED program work through GED Academy or Essential Education Program. Both programs are online resources the students can use to help prepare for the high equivalency degree. The students can complete the pretest, get study material and take a practice test. Before the students register for the actual exam, they must complete a pretest and score 145 or higher. Also, the students are working on the Edgenuity platform and taking an elective and VA/Economics and Personal Finance.
